Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist? In short, no!

Many people have their orthodontic journey begin with a referral from a general dentist to a specialist orthodontist. But you do not need a referral to visit an orthodontist. If you feel your smile or bite needs improvement just use the “find an orthodontist” tool provided by Australian Society of Orthodontists.
It’s a good idea to have a check-up with a dentist before you start orthodontic treatment, but you can come in for orthodontic consultation at any time.
Some general dentists provide orthodontic treatments, but they are not orthodontists and do not have the same levels of training or experience as orthodontists. Orthodontists and dentists both care for your dental health, but in different ways. This is a bit like your general medical practitioner and other medical specialists- they work together, but have different training and skills. So trust your smile and bite to an expert by visiting a specialist orthodontist.
