How does the process work?

We understand you would like to know what to expect in terms of appointments and the such. Please find a detailed answer to your question on our “Treatment Steps” page. And remember, you can ask your orthodontist or our team questions at any stage. We want you to be comfortable with the process.

What are braces? What are clear aligners (Invisalign)?

You might know about traditional braces, but these days there are more comfortable and less obvious ways to straighten your teeth too. Come and visit us to learn more about tooth straightening with Invisalign aligners.

How much does Invisalign treatment cost?

Great question! Without an initial consultation to meet you in person, it’s near impossible to determine the cost of orthodontic treatment. Each case differs from one to the next and there’s no ‘one size fits all’ price. Click to learn more about this topic on our “aligner cost” page.

What ages are suitable for orthodontics?

Achieving ideal smiles isn’t usually possible until nearly all adult teeth come into the mouth around age 11 or 12. If you have a particular concern about your younger child’s smile or bite, speak with your dentist. Of course we love kids and are happy to have your family accompany you to appointments.

Treating adults and teens are one of Dr Leen’s particular interest in orthodontics. You are never too old to have orthodontic treatment!

What is digital orthodontics?

Digital orthodontics is how Dr Leen uses the latest technology to help deliver your new smile. For example, you might have heard of Invisalign clear aligners. The entire process to make aligners uses digital shape capture of your teeth, tooth movement planning and appliance manufacture. In the digital age, impressions are a thing of the past with our 3D video tooth scanner. Learn more on our What is Invisalign? page or book your consultation to find out how it can improve your smile.

What is corrective jaw surgery?

Some people’s teeth don’t fit together well because the jaws that hold the teeth are different sizes. In these cases, the best way to achieve an ideal bite, smile and facial profile is to combine orthodontic treatment with jaw surgery. This collaborative orthodontic treatment also involves an Oral Maxillofacial surgeon. If your Invisalign treatment should be combined with jaw surgery to get the best result, Dr Leen will advise you. Then you would discuss with a surgeon before starting any treatment.

Do I have to visit often for treatment? I don’t live in Ballarat

Sounds like aligners could suit you pretty well. Our patients only need to attend every 6-10 weeks for appointments in Ballarat. Therefore if you travel a lot or live outside Ballarat, we will make it work for you. One of the superb feature of aligners is that they shouldn’t give you hassles in between appointments.

People who live or work anywhere in the western district can have Invisalign treatment at our Ballarat practice. Are you from Hamilton, Daylesford or Avoca? Great, come in and meet our friendly regional team who understand life outside Melbourne. Coming to Ballarat for appointments it is a nice excuse to visit town and do some shopping, catch up with friends or see a movie. Even if you are from Apsley, Stawell, Dunnoly or a place somewhere in between, you can straighten your teeth with Invisalign at Midwestern Aligner Orthodontics Ballarat.

How about boarding school and orthodontics?

Is your teen at boarding school in Ballarat? We believe we have an excellent orthodontic treatment option for them in the form of Invisalign clear aligners. Unlike braces, Invisalign doesn’t have brackets or wires that can break and bother them when they are at home on holidays. We know you don’t want to drive to town for a braces problem. In the unlikely event of an issue with their aligners while they are at home, it can be sorted out with a phone call to our reception team.

Also, we are happy to accommodate the parent/s of a boarder being away from Ballarat for appointments while your teen attends in person. You probably use FaceTime, Whatsapp video or Skype to contact your teen in the boarding house. We can use the same technology (or just use a good old phone call) so you can join in appointments even if you can’t make it to Ballarat. This way, you can be sure your investment in your teen’s treatment is progressing well.

What is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist like Dr Leen at Midwestern Aligner Orthodontics is a registered dental specialist. After working as a general dentist for several years there is a rigorous selection process for entry into a 3-year full-time orthodontic course. After this extensive university specialty training, orthodontists no longer do check-ups, fillings or clean your teeth, they just live and breathe tooth-straightening. Some general dentists provide orthodontic treatments, but their main focus is on general oral health and other aspects of dentistry. By choosing a registered specialist orthodontist like Dr Leen you can be assured you are in experienced hands when having your teeth straightened.
