Orthodontic Braces do work very well to straighten teeth, but if you had the opportunity to choose a mouthful of wires with traditional braces or a smooth, clear aligner, which would you take?
At Midwestern Aligner Orthodontics we just use Invisalign aligners to straighten teeth. We think they are the way of the future and want you to have the chance to experience this fresh approach.
Clear aligners are much less noticeable than traditional orthodontic braces. Aligners are perfect for:
- Older adults who want to look professional at work.
- Young adults who don’t want to be mistaken for high schoolers with braces.
- Teens who prefer a brace-free smile to help their confidence.
Traditional braces use metal brackets glued to the teeth and flexible wires attached to the brackets to put pressure onto teeth and make them move. The wires can come loose and bother lips and cheeks. Whilst braces these days can be quite small and there are ceramic options to make them less obvious, people will still notice you are wearing braces.
There is a type of “invisible braces” that are placed on the inside of your teeth, but these are much more expensive than traditional braces and not offered by many orthodontists.
Traditional braces tend to catch food and plaque germs. This can mean tooth decay around the brackets, which is a permanent scar on the tooth. If you want to do a good job of cleaning around braces to avoid tooth decay, it takes a bit longer than a normal tooth-cleaning routine.
This is less of an issue with aligners, as you remove them and then brush your teeth like usual. Metal braces and ceramic braces can be broken by eating hard foods, so you have to be very careful when eating and avoid some things entirely. Clear aligners are taken out for eating, so go your hardest!
